How did ancient and pre-modern Indian maritime kingdoms — the Chola, Chera, Pandya, Satavahana, and Kalabhra — spread Indian culture across Southeast Asia from 100 CE to 1200 CE, creating traditions that survive today in places like Bali?
This unit traces a narrative arc from island origins in Sri Lanka, through early royal legends, to the peak of imperial maritime power under the Cholas, and finally to the enduring island legacy of Balinese Hindu culture — asking students throughout whether this long history of contact was cultural synthesis, cultural domination, or both.

Overview of this Unit
This unit introduces Ancient Indian Civilization in line with standards for World History grade 7 (in some states grades 6 or 8).
It covers the history of the civilizations, an introduction to Hindu concepts, ancient Indian societies, and the place of ancient India in global trade networks. 3 lesson plans are sequential, allowing an educator to explore a variety of concepts with students. 1 lesson plan is designed as a single-lesson overview.
